# `Continent`

A continent, as the United Nations groups the world: `europe`, `asia`.

Use it for rough grouping, such as a sales report by continent. For anything legal or tax-related, use [`Country`](/docs/types/type-country.md), since the UN's groups aren't borders.

## Shape

One of these 6 values:

`Continent.africa`, `Continent.americas`, `Continent.antarctica`, `Continent.asia`, `Continent.europe`, `Continent.oceania`.

## Example

```jadpo
Continent.europe
```

`text.parse(raw, as: Continent)` reads one from text that comes from outside. Text that isn't one at all fails `malformed`, such as `Europa`, `150` or `north_america`.

## Good to know

- The Americas are one value, `Continent.americas`. There's no separate North or South America.
- `==` tells you whether two are the same. `<` and `list.sort_by` don't take it.

## In JSON

A string, in a request, a response or `json.write`:

```json
"antarctica"
"europe"
```

## Details

<details>
<summary>Text form, storage, how it is shown, and operations</summary>

`Continent` is in the group Places, and has been in Jadpo since 0.1.0.

### Text form

`text.from` writes one standard text form, the same form `text.parse` reads back: `antarctica` and `europe`.

### How it is stored

It is stored in one column named for the field, of type `text`. `europe` is stored as `'europe'`.

### How it is shown to people

`text.format(value, locale:)` shows it to people in their locale.

With `locale: Locale.en_gb`:

| Value | Shown |
|---|---|
| `antarctica` | `Antarctica` |
| `europe` | `Europe` |

### Operations

It also takes `text.parse`, `text.from`, `text.format`, `json.read`, `json.write` and `==`. [How every standard type behaves](/docs/every-standard-type-meets-one-contract.md) says how they work.
