# `VideoCodec`

A video format as browsers name it: `avc1.42001E`, `vp09.00.10.08`.

Use it to tell a player which format a video is in. For sound, use [`AudioCodec`](/docs/types/type-audio-codec.md).

## Shape

One value, held as text in one set form, with no parts: `vp8`.

## Example

```jadpo
VideoCodec("avc1.42001E")
```

`VideoCodec(raw)` checks the text, and text that isn't one breaks the `format` rule.

`text.parse(raw, as: VideoCodec)` reads one from text that comes from outside. Text that isn't one at all fails `malformed`, such as `h264`, `avc1` or `AVC1.42001E`.

## Good to know

- Casual names such as `h264` are refused, since a player needs the whole name.
- `==` tells you whether two are the same. `<` and `list.sort_by` don't take it.

## In JSON

A string, in a request, a response or `json.write`:

```json
"avc1.42001E"
"hvc1.1.6.L93.B0"
"av01.0.04M.08"
```

## Details

<details>
<summary>Text form, storage, how it is shown, and operations</summary>

`VideoCodec` is in the group Media and visual, and has been in Jadpo since 0.1.0.

### Text form

`text.from` writes one standard text form, the same form `text.parse` reads back: `avc1.42001E`, `hvc1.1.6.L93.B0` and `av01.0.04M.08`.

### How it is stored

It is stored in one column named for the field, of type `text`. `av01.0.04M.08` is stored as `'av01.0.04M.08'`.

### How it is shown to people

`text.format(value, locale:)` shows it to people in their locale.

With `locale: Locale.en_gb`:

| Value | Shown |
|---|---|
| `avc1.42001E` | `avc1.42001E` |
| `hvc1.1.6.L93.B0` | `hvc1.1.6.L93.B0` |
| `av01.0.04M.08` | `av01.0.04M.08` |
| `vp09.00.10.08` | `vp09.00.10.08` |
| `vp8` | `vp8` |

### Operations

It also takes `text.parse`, `text.from`, `text.format`, `json.read`, `json.write` and `==`. [How every standard type behaves](/docs/every-standard-type-meets-one-contract.md) says how they work.
