WritingScript
On this page
A writing system, written as its four-letter code: Latn, Jpan.
Use it when the script matters separately from the language, such as Serbian in Latin or Cyrillic, or choosing a font. Most apps want Language or Locale.
Shape
One of 224 values, such as WritingScript.adlm, written Adlm. Details has them.
Example
WritingScript.latntext.parse(raw, as: WritingScript) reads one from text that comes from outside. Text that isn't one at all fails malformed, such as latin, Lat or Latnn.
Good to know
- The value's name is lower case,
WritingScript.latn, but it is writtenLatn. ==tells you whether two are the same.<andlist.sort_bydon't take it.
In JSON
A string, in a request, a response or json.write:
"Jpan""Latn""Zyyy"

Text form
text.from writes one standard text form, the same form text.parse reads back: Jpan, Latn and Zyyy.
How it is stored
It is stored in one column named for the field, of type text. Latn is stored as 'Latn'.
How it is shown to people
text.format(value, locale:) shows it to people in their locale.
With locale: Locale.en_gb:
| Value | Shown |
|---|---|
Jpan |
Japanese |
Latn |
Latin |
Zyyy |
Common |
Operations
It also takes text.parse, text.from, text.format, json.read, json.write and ==. How every standard type behaves says how they work.
