Country

On this page

A country, written as its two-letter code: GB.

Use it for where something or someone is, such as the country of an address. For someone's citizenship, use Nationality. For a state or a region inside a country, use CountrySubdivision.

Shape

One of 260 values, such as Country.ad, written AD. Details has them.

Example

example
Country.gb

text.parse(raw, as: Country) reads one from text that comes from outside. Text that isn't one at all fails malformed, such as GBR, UK or 826.

Good to know

  • Each value is its code in lower case: Country.in is India.
  • text.format can also write the three-letter code, GBR, with form: CodeForm.alpha3, or the number, 826, with form: CodeForm.numeric.
  • The withdrawn code YU is only read from old data, so don't create new ones.
  • == tells you whether two are the same. < and list.sort_by don't take it.

In JSON

A string, in a request, a response or json.write:

json
"GB""IN""JP"

Text form

text.from writes one standard text form, the same form text.parse reads back: GB, IN and JP.

How it is stored

It is stored in one column named for the field, of type text. JP is stored as 'JP'.

How it is shown to people

text.format(value, locale:) shows it to people in their locale.

With locale: Locale.en_gb:

Value Shown
GB United Kingdom
IN India
JP Japan
YU Yugoslavia

Operations

It also takes text.parse, text.from, text.format, json.read, json.write and ==. How every standard type behaves says how they work.
